A recent article (link below) is a telling story as to why it is so important to create an Estate Plan. A Holocaust survivor, whose wife passed away 20 years ago, did not have any children. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 97. He left a $40 million dollar estate. Unfortunately, he did not have a Will nor a Trust. Half of the estate has been reduced by taxes, and you guessed it, lawyers. Why would someone do this? In my experience it is because creating an estate plan requires the acknowledgment that a person is not immortal. I understand the concept, but I dont really understand why someone would leave their families to deal with this situation.
